Whale and Dolphin Watching srilanka

Whale and Dolphin Watching

Whale and Dolphin Watching

You will have to wake up early and travel to the Trincomalee Harbour where you will be met by our friendly crew at 6 a.m. You will then take a boat along with your guide and travel for around half an hour out to sea where you will be able to see dolphins, turtles and maybe even blue whales and sperm whales. It is a truly unique experience and a brilliant opportunity to witness the earth’s largest mammal – the blue whale.
Our experienced crew will take you to where you can observe the friendly Spinner Dolphins in their hundreds as they play, dance and show off their acrobatic skills. The best time to see them would be from May to September.

Whale & Dolphin Watching at the East Coast of Sri Lanka around Trincomalee/Nilaveli

Following the recent development of Whale & Dolphin Watching Tours in Mirissa, Trincomalee is rapidly emerging as another internationally important whale-watching destination. Blue whales in particular (plus smaller numbers of sperm whales) can regularly be seen around six to eight nautical miles east of Trincomalee (about 30min by boat), Dolphins (mainly Spinner) are also regularly seen. Most sightings occur between March/April and August/September, as whales continue their migrations around the island from the south coast (where they mainly congregate from December to April) – this means that Sri Lanka offers around ten months of continuous whale & dolphin watching annually at different points around the coast.

The Diverse Species and Season

The Diverse Species and Season

The blue whale does make an appearance in this region, though not as commonly as in Mirissa, but the world’s largest mammal is more than accommodating when it comes to being flashy in Trincomalee. Another friendly behemoth that frequents the waters of Trinco is the sperm whale, which deep-dives down the very bottom to feed and then pops up the rare now and then to say hello and take a breath.

July is the best time to spot blue whales here, whereas whale watching, in general, is in season on the East Coast from May to October every year. If you’re experienced and are able to get a guide for your underwater expedition, you could even swim along with the whales!
